A Note on Assymmetry in Phrase Structure Grammars

چکیده
I n M a t t h e w s (1963) 1 several classes of g rammars are defined and their generat ive power determined. These g rammars are defined part ia l ly by the form of their rules and par t ia l ly by the form of the derivat ions of the sentences they generate. T h a t paper shows t h a t one-way g rammars and one-way d iscont inuous g rammars are equ iva len t to context-free g rammars as defined by Chomsky (1959). This paper shows t h a t the restr ict ions on the form of the rules are no t essential ;

Capturing Linguistic Generalizations with Metarules in an Annotated Phrase-Structure Grammar
1. Introduction Computational models employed by current natural language understanding systems rely on phrase-structure representations of syntax. Whether implemented as augmented transition nets, BNF grammars, annotated phrase-structure grammars, or similar methods, a phrase-structure representation makes the parsing problem computatlonally tractable [7]. However, phrase-structure representat...
متن کاملA Linear Logic Treatment of Phrase Structure
A number of researchers have proposed applications of Girard’s Linear Logic [7] to computational linguistics. Most have focused primarily on the connection between linear logic and categorial grammars. In this work we show how linear logic can be used to provide an attractive encoding of phrase structure grammars for parsing structures involving unbounded dependencies. The resulting grammars ar...
متن کاملD-PATR: A Development Environment for Unification-Based Grammars
I)-PATR is a development environment for unification-based grammars on Xerox l i00 series work stations. It is based on the PATR formalism developed at SRI International. This formalism is suitable for encoding a wide variety of grammars. At one end of this range are simple phrase-structure grammars with no feature augmentations. The PATR formalism can also be used to encode grammars that are b...
متن کاملThings between Lexicon and Grammar
A number of grammar formalisms were proposed in 80’s, such as Lexical Functional Grammars, Generalized Phrase Structure Grammars, and Tree Adjoining Grammars. Those formalisms then started to put a stress on lexicon, and were called as lexicalist (or lexicalized) grammars. Representative examples of lexicalist grammars were Head-driven Phrase Structure Grammars (HPSG) and Lexicalized Tree Adjoi...
متن کاملComit ==* Patr Ii
Here is the history of linguistics in one sentence: once upon a time linguists (i.e. syntacticlans) used augmented phrase structure grammars, then they went over to transformational grammars, and then some of them started using augmented phrase structure grammars again, (space for moral~. Whilst we are in this careful scholarly mode, let us do the same service for computational linguistics: onc...
